The Well.. Maybe not world domination. :)

During 2013 I really took my “learning in transit” skills to the Next level. I started following podcasts seriously, and I must say that it have had a tremendous impact in my learning and improvement in general. For instance every time (ok. Not every time.. :), but almost every time) I am doing tasks that require minimum intelligence like walking, cleaning, doing the dishes, riding the bus or any other time like driving or running I listen to audiobooks or podcasts. It is a perfect time to get inspiration and information with minimum energy expenditure and make every learning opportunity count.

    Started big..

I started of with around 15 podcasts but after I while I got overwhelmed and could not digest all of them, ,so after a while I have now limited it to around seven, not only because seven is a magic number but because it works for me. And I say around because as you will notice when you read further down this article that one is not really a podcast but a CD and I will explain why I consider it my favourite podcast.

    Structure of this article

This article will be structured in the following fashion, first I will give an order of “importance” from FLAWD perspective which Podcast you should implement, then We will dissicate each cast with this structure:

    • name of podcast
    • podcast link
    • short information what I think it gives
    • top 3 takeaways from the podcast,
    • no 1 CTA (Call To Action)  so far
    • Favourite episode and link to it, and a
    • Rating: 1-5 (5 being best)

    then we are done :)

    On order of greatness:

    SUCCESS_magazine_cover

    1. Success Magazine CD

this is Not a podcast, but it has a similar structure. It is available online – if you subscribe to SUCCESS Mag digital editition (20 USD/year – very cheap!)  It comes out once a month and it is usually Darren Hardy that does the interviews. They have focus on improvement of course, but usually it is marketing tips and tricks from famous authors and entrepreneurs. This is a MUST and well worth the very small investment in money, and time. Also available as CD if you are driving. I am hoping they turn this into a podcast to sync into my normal podcast routine. But for now I download them digitally and put them as playlist in Spotify.

    • Frequency: 1 a month
    • Length: 1 hour
    • Cost: 20/year
    • Takeaways: motivation, inspiration and learn from others
    • CTA: to always have CTAs :)
    • Fav episode: Louis Zamperini, a olympian, a raft survivor, war POW, a survivor. The book: Unbroken, is based on Louis life. And this interview is just great.

    3. Ben Greenfield Fitness Podcast

Great podcast with health and fitness focus by Ben GreenField. Ben gives great Biohacking tips, i.e. what to eat, why and how to achieve optimal health. Ben is an active coach and focus in on triathletes and endurance sports, however the tips and discussions cover interesting topics like biohacking, sleep, techniques, technology and current research from the top fitness experts in the world. Ben has a very open mind to new things, only issue I have with this podcast is that they usually “talk slow” (for me at least) so I speed things up by listening in 1.5x speed in my podcast app.

    How to listen to podcasts

    Pocket-Casts-Logo

I use Pocket casts which is one of our favorite FLAWD apps. Because it supports both iOS and Android if and when I switch phones and tablets I don’t have to reconfigure anything.

How to make notes from podcasts

IF I want to make a note of something that was particularly useful in a podcast, Pocket Casts has a “click-share-position-in-epidose”  function which is very useful. Like this:

    2014-03-09 19.10.30

Then you can email that position to yourself or add it as a Evernote Note. Or you can just write your note in your Evernote log over and tag it #podcastnotes and #podcast name. In the beginning I took an immense amount of notes, but don’t worry, its not that big of a deal if you miss some kind of information. You will get it next time, promise. :)

Currently we are looking for podcasts about:

    • CrossFit and
    • online business.

CTA: Take one of the above podcasts and start to listen to it

    • short information what I think it gives

    • top 3 takeaways from the podcast,

    • CTA: to always have CTAs :)

Which podcasts are you listening to?

It is a perfect time to get inspiration and information with minimum energy expenditure and making every learning opportunity count.

Not every time.. :), but almost every time) I am doing tasks that require minimum intelligence like walking, cleaning, doing the dishes, riding the bus or any other time like driving or running I listen to audiobooks or podcasts. It is a perfect time to get inspiration and information with minimum energy expenditure and making every learning opportunity count.

    • short information what I think it gives
    • top 3 takeaways from the podcast,
    • no 1 CTA (Call To Action)  so far

Ben has a very open mind to new things, only issue I have with this podcast is that they usually “talk slow” (for me at least) so I speed things up by listening in 1.5x speed in my podcast app.

I started following podcasts seriously, and I must say that it have had a tremendous impact in my learning and improvement in general. For instance every time (ok. Not every time.. :), but almost every time) I am doing tasks that require minimum intelligence like walking, cleaning, doing the dishes, riding the bus or any other time like driving or running I listen to audiobooks or podcasts. It is a perfect time to get inspiration and information with minimum energy expenditure and making every learning opportunity count.

    Started big..

    6. Internet Storm Center

Unbelivably useful information. As a Security Professional there are so much information and so many podcast out there like.

All of them are good – and I occasionally listen to them. But Johannes Ullrich keeps the information short and crispy, straight to the point in a very digestible way. Around 5 min which is a PERFECT way to start the day with crisp new security information. Comparing this to for instance Security Now which both has commercial breaks and where they talk for more than 1hour. this is a great podcast.

    Frequency: Daily
    Length: 5-6min
    Cost:  free
Takeaways:  Security Awareness about current issues.
    CTA: Two-factor, common sense.
Fav ep: none however Johannes always mentions where he is and usually it is in “jacksonville” florida, but a nerdy thing to to is to guess where he is next. :)

    How to listen to podcast?

    Pocket-Casts-Logo

Pocket casts.  One of our favorite FLAWD apps Because it supports both iOS and Android if and when I switch phones and tablets I don’t have to reconfiggure anything.  IF I want to make a note or something that was particularly useful in a podcast I click share position in epidose – and I can then share with friends or just ADD it to my evernote log over podcast notes.

CTA: Take one of the above podcasts and start to listen to it

Body-in-chair   How many times have you heard from someone at the gym, from friends, colleagues and relatives that they have problems with their back? What is the underlying reason for this? One could argue that there are several reasons, like for instance, little or no exercise, poor lifting technique, an overall a poor management of posture, inactiveness, sitting down and so on.. How can we solve this? And how can we achieve perfect posture in all situations? When I wrote the post on top the top 5 positive effects I get from training, I stated that one of my goals when starting training was to achieve a good posture. However I must admit that I had forgotten about that goal for a long time, which simply highlights that we (normally) don't get a great posture in "for free". In our society there is so much sitting and we are so focused on "getting the job done" (task completion) instead of doing the movement of completing the task correct. To always have a perfect posture is therefore almost always a conscious choice.

What does it mean to have a perfect posture?

Your body will last longer-First and foremost a perfect posture means that your body will last longer.  If you sit/stand/run/lift correctly , you will "hurt" your back and your body less than doing it in an overextended or overly flexed position. The_Force More FORCE-You will be able to lever more FORCE - when in competition, in battle, or whatever situation, you will be able to deliver force. What you have trained at the lab (the gym/box) you will use in a "real situation. More Choice - You will have the choice, by being aware of what you should do , you will be aware of the risks when not having a perfect braced position. An example is when lifting heavy during a competition. In this case you might want to skip your posture to be able to win that competition. But you will know that it is a conscious choice from your side.
The more aware you are, the more options you have, the more options you have, the better choices you can make, the better choices you can make, the better results you can create.

Supple Leopard?

Becoming_a_Supple_Leopard_by_Kelly_starrett

Kelly Starett has written an excellent book called: Becoming a Supple Leopard. In the book he discuss something he calls "the bracing sequence". We will use those steps as a base in this article but my advice is that you buy it - it might just save your life! The book explains  3 Movement principles
  • Midline Stabilizations and Organisatoin (spinal mechanics)
  • One-Joint Rule
  • Laws of torque
Kelly explains that movement principles are the master blueprint for creating safe and stable positions for all human movements. In the book you learn to maintain a good posture during loaded, dynamic movements, AND how to create stability in your joint to generate: Maximum FORCE POWER & SPEED

4 simple steps for perfect posture?

Step 1. Squeeze your butt as hard as you can.

Gray242 This will put your pelvis in a neutral position,  keep your feet directly under your hips, keep them parallel. DON'T think about anything else then squeezing the butt. Most people think that just tightening the abs is enough, it is almost impossible for abs to control pelvis.

2. STEP 2 PULL YOUR ribcage Down!

Listen to arnold: put that cookie down! But let the ribcage down instead! :) Gray112 Pull your lower ribs in and balance your ribcage over your pelvis. ALWAYS keep your ribcage an Pelvis ALIGNED, like two bowls of water with surface tension.

Step 3 GET YOUR BELLY TIGHT

LOCK your pelvis and ribcage in place with your abs. Kelly mentions:
Glutes set the position, Abs brace the position.
By tightening the midline - you create a higher "intra -abdominal" pressure around your spine - creating an very firm lever.

STEP 4 Head in neutral position and shoulders in a stable position

Centralize your head over your shoulders and gaze forward. Align your ears over shoulders. Draw the heads of arm bones back. Release your shoulder down. Keep thumbs pointing forward and think about alignins Postures sit-better-live-better-bracing-sequence BURN THIS SEQUENCE into  your MOTOR PROGRAM!

One of your goals in life should be to reproduce same stable position in any situation in any environment.

THIS TAKES TIME! Tip: have the mindset that anything that is not a braced spinal neutral position is probably going to kill you. Want to know how to live forever? Check out this post . Kelly Starett gives more amazingly simple, useful and practical tips in the book, like the "two hand rule". Get the book here.   Kelly also has a great site focusing on preventing pain, increasing your results in training and in life by increasing your mobility, range-of-motion, and being able to diagnose and be pro-active in training. mobilityWOD.com IF you are really serious about posture, contact a serious PT, take a course in posture and use this sequence in your everyday life and especially in training.  Once again this is not easy, it takes time. Kelly mentions that it might take "20-30%" of your MENTAL RAM - but I would guess 40-50% in the beginning.  Try it out and let us know what you think!
